Before its extinction, where did the dodo bird live?
Before its extinction, the dodo bird lived exclusively on the island of Mauritius. This remote island is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, and served as the dodo’s sole natural habitat for millions of years, allowing it to evolve unique characteristics.
The dodo was a flightless bird, a trait it developed due to the absence of natural predators on Mauritius. Living in this isolated, predator-free environment, the dodo had no need for flight, and its wings gradually diminished over evolutionary time. They were large, relatively slow-moving birds, weighing around 20-23 kilograms (44-50 lbs), and they nested on the ground, consuming fruits, seeds, and possibly small invertebrates.
