Before pivoting to chewing gum, what product did the Wrigley Company originally sell?
Before achieving global fame as a chewing gum empire, the Wrigley Company originally sold scouring soap.
Founder William Wrigley Jr. came to Chicago in 1891 with the intention of selling his father’s product, Wrigley’s Scouring Soap. As a young salesman, Wrigley quickly realized the effectiveness of incentives, so he began offering “premiums” (free gifts) to encourage merchants to buy his soap. He soon started giving away baking powder as a promotion, but when customers showed greater interest in the premium baking powder than the soap itself, he strategically pivoted his business to focus on selling the baking powder. It was only after he started giving away packets of chewing gum as a premium with the baking powder that he made his famous final pivot, recognizing that the gum was the most desired product of all.
