The Frisbee is named after the Frisbie Pie Company, a bakery founded in 1871 by William Russell Frisbie in Bridgeport, Connecticut. For decades, the company sold thousands of homemade pies daily to retailers, restaurants, and schools across New England, including nearby Yale University. These delectable pastries were served in round, shallow tin pans that featured the company’s name, “Frisbie’s Pies,” stamped clearly on the bottom. While the pies themselves were the intended product, it was the empty metal containers that eventually gave rise to a global sporting phenomenon.
