The mathematical sequence “0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…” is named after which mathematician?
The mathematical sequence “0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…” is named after the Italian mathematician Leonardo Pisano, more commonly known as Fibonacci. While the sequence itself was known in ancient India, Fibonacci introduced it to Western European mathematics in his 1202 book, Liber Abaci (Book of Calculation).
In Liber Abaci, Fibonacci used the sequence to solve a problem involving the growth of an idealized rabbit population. The problem asked: if a pair of rabbits is placed in a field, and if they breed a new pair every month starting from their second month, how many pairs will there be in a year? The solution to this problem generates the now-famous sequence where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones.
