What is the only major U.S. city founded by a woman? Explained
Miami, the only major American city founded by a woman, owes its origins to Julia Tuttle. Originally from Cleveland, she journeyed to Florida in 1874 to visit her father residing in the region. Despite the presence of mosquito-filled marshes, Tuttle found the location appealing. Upon inheriting her father’s land following his passing, she acquired additional acreage and successfully persuaded railroad magnate Henry Flagler to lengthen tracks southward. The city, established by Tuttle, was officially integrated in 1896, blossoming into a vibrant urban center by the 1920s.
