In a surprising twist for a game now viewed as a benign recreational activity, pinball was once prohibited in New York City. Back in 1942, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia spearheaded a campaign against pinball machines, alleging that they encouraged gambling, corrupted the morals of young people, and diverted small change from the war effort. La Guardia authorized crackdowns on pinball parlors, where machines were destroyed with sledgehammers and tossed into the Hudson River. This prohibition endured for more than three decades until 1976 when a coalition of enthusiasts and pinball manufacturers successfully persuaded the city to revoke the ban.
