Fremont and his company of explorers, which included the illustrious frontiersman Kit Carson, were the first European Americans to travel to and survey the region that is now known as northwest Nevada in the year 1843.

People who spoke the Washoe and Northern Paiute languages had lived in this area prior to the arrival of the Europeans.

Carson was honored by having a river that ran through this region given his name by Frémont.

In 1858, westward settler Abraham Curry bought a local ranch and established the town of Carson City, naming it after the nearby river and its namesake, Kit Carson.

Six years later, in 1864, Nevada was admitted to the Union as a state, and Carson City was selected to serve as the state capital.

Carson City has occupied this position for more than 150 years.
