New Jersey received its name as a tribute to Jersey Island, one of the Channel Islands positioned in the English Channel between England and France. Following the English takeover of the region from the Dutch in 1664, King Charles II bestowed the land upon Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley as a token of appreciation for their allegiance during the English Civil War. In recognition of Carteret’s service and ties to his homeland, the colony was christened “New Jersey.” This practice of naming after familiar European locations was prevalent among the initial colonizers who transplanted familiar place names from Europe to the Americas.
