[STC00877] The highlight of any road trip through the United States may very well be one of the country’s many oddball roadside sights, and the world’s largest ball of twine is certainly not an exception. However, there are a number of attractions located all around the country that have been vying for the title for quite some time. The Darwin Ball, which was manufactured by Francis Johnson and located in Minnesota, held the title of “largest ball of twine” for a number of years. A research published in “The Atlantic” found that the largest one is now located in Cawker City, which is in the state of Kansas. Farmer Frank Stoeber initiated the initiative in 1953, and ever since then, the size of the ball of twine has been steadily increased through a series of additions. As of the month of September 2013, it had a circumference of 41.42 feet, a diameter of 8.06 feet, and an estimated weight of almost 20,000 pounds. It was also estimated to contain more than 8 million feet of twine. An annual event called “Twine-A-Thon” is held to encourage members of the town as well as visitors to continue contributing to the project.
