[STC002270] The Hoover Dam receives a great deal of attention in the United States, which is warranted, but the Three Gorges Dam in China is in a league of its own. It is a well-known landmark that stretches for more than a mile and rises to a height of 630 feet. Because it is so enormous, NASA estimates that it has the capacity to contain more than 5 trillion gallons of water at any given time. The Yangtze River is impounded by the dam, which gets its name from its location close to the bottom of three gorges at the base of the Wu Shan Mountains. It was a project nearly 100 years in the making: Records of plans for a massive dam at that spot date back to 1919, but only actually began to come together in 1992 when China voted to start construction.
