[STC003079] French artist Jannot Derid unintentionally established the world’s first ice hotel in the remote community of Jukkasjarvi in northern Finland. In 1990, he built an igloo near an ice art exhibition. Visitors to the show were unable to book accommodations in the city, so they approached Derid with the proposition of staying in his igloo instead. The first ice hotel was created when they laid their sleeping bags on top of reindeer skins and went to sleep for the night. Now, the hotel is reconstructed annually between the months of December and April, and it is open to guests as well as artists who wish to contribute to the show.
