In 1939, at the age of 18, while studying art in New York, Bob Kane introduced Batman to the world. Influenced by characters from pulp fiction such as Zorro and the Shadow, as well as by Leonardo da Vinci’s illustrations of a bat-shaped flying contraption, Kane envisioned a masked crusader who instilled fear in wrongdoers. His initial portrayal, however, differed significantly from the modern Batman—sporting vivid red tights, large stiff bat wings, and a basic domino mask instead of the now-familiar cowl. Despite its humble origins, Kane’s vision laid the groundwork for one of the most legendary superheroes in contemporary culture.
