Which film was among the first ever released on DVD?
The 1996 disaster film Twister is widely cited as one of the very first movies commercially released on the DVD format in the United States.
While the DVD format was launched in Japan first, with titles like Blade Runner and The Fugitive, Twister was famously one of the lead titles for the U.S. launch in March 1997. The action-packed film, with its state-of-the-art special effects and immersive Dolby Digital sound, was the perfect showcase to convince consumers that DVD offered dramatically superior audio and visual quality over the aging VHS format. Its inclusion in the initial batch was a deliberate strategic choice to drive mass adoption of the new technology. Approximately 32 titles were part of that first U.S. launch wave.
