While many people believe a popular myth about a machine glitch, the candy most famously associated with a “manufacturing error” in its naming history is Milk Duds.

Originally created in 1928 by Hoffman and Company (later acquired by Hershey), the manufacturer was trying to make perfectly round chocolate-covered caramels. However, because the caramel was difficult to shape, the machines produced pieces that were lumpy and misshapen. The maker reportedly called the failed attempts “duds,” and the name stuck.
