Which iconic landmark was once owned by a private citizen? Explained
While Stonehenge is commonly perceived as a historic site perpetually safeguarded by the government, it was predominantly under private ownership throughout its past. In 1915, this ancient stone circle was listed for public sale and acquired by lawyer Cecil Chubb for a mere £6,600. As the story goes, he impulsively purchased it as a present for his wife, although she supposedly did not share his enthusiasm for the gesture. Chubb retained ownership of Stonehenge for a brief period before gifting it to the British government in 1918, stipulating that the public should have continuous and reasonable access to the site.
