Often referred to as the “Boy King,” Tutankhamun ascended to the throne of ancient Egypt around 1332 BCE, following the death of his father, Akhenaten. Given his extremely young age, he ruled under the close guidance of powerful advisors, most notably the Grand Vizier Ay.
During his brief reign, which lasted only about a decade before his death around age 18, Tutankhamun reversed many of his father’s unpopular religious reforms, restoring the traditional Egyptian polytheistic religion and its sacred temples. His lasting fame comes not from his reign, but from the discovery of his nearly intact, treasure-filled tomb in 1922.
