In 1872, nearly fifty years before women achieved the right to vote nationally, Victoria Woodhull shattered political norms by running for the presidency. Representing the Equal Rights Party, Woodhull was a polarizing figure who advocated for “free love,” labor reforms, and women’s suffrage. Her candidacy was technically controversial because she was only 33 years old at the time, which was two years younger than the constitutionally mandated minimum age of 35 required to hold the highest office.
