Beyond merely chicken, in the 1928 presidential campaign, a Republican Party publication asserted that should Herbert Hoover emerge victorious, there would be “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage.” Despite Hoover’s significant win over Alfred Smith, the pledge of prosperity made by the Republican Party was disrupted seven months into Hoover’s presidency. The catastrophic stock market crash of 1929 triggered the onset of the Great Depression, eroding public faith in Hoover. As the Depression reached its nadir, voters opted for Franklin D. Roosevelt to succeed Hoover in 1932.
