Who was bumped off the half dollar to make room for John F. Kennedy, in 1964?
The Franklin Half Dollar was the immediate predecessor to the Kennedy Half Dollar. It was first minted in 1948, replacing the popular Walking Liberty Half Dollar, and was produced continuously until 1963. The coin featured the likeness of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse (front) and the Liberty Bell on the reverse (back), making him the first non-president to appear on a U.S. circulating coin.
Following the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963, there was immense public demand for a coin to honor him. Legislation was quickly passed to redesign the half dollar, a coin that, according to Jacqueline Kennedy, would not require replacing the image of a previous president. The new Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production, ending the Franklin Half Dollar series after only 16 years, far short of the usual 25-year minimum lifespan for a coin design.
