Roughly half cats living at Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum share what distinctive physical trait?

Roughly half of the cats living at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida, share the distinctive physical trait of being polydactyl. This means they have a genetic anomaly resulting in them having more than the usual number of toes on one or more of their paws.

The majority of the cats at the museum are descendants of a white, six-toed cat named Snow White, who was given to the author Ernest Hemingway by a ship captain. Hemingway had a fondness for these unusual cats and often referred to them as “six-toed cats.” Today, the population of approximately 50 cats on the museum grounds is carefully monitored, and about half of them exhibit the polydactyl trait, carrying on the tradition started by Snow White.
