There have been assertions made that the poem is about three Protestants who were put to death by Queen Mary I of England; however, this has never been shown. The first version of this poem was written by Thomas Ravenscroft and published in 1609. It read, “Three blinde mice, three blinde mice, dame Iulian, dame Iulian, the Miller and his merry olde Wife, she scrapte her tripe licke thou the knife.” The modern form of this poem reads, “Three blinde mice, three blinde mice, dame Iulian, the Miller and his merry olde Wife.”
