The estate is populated by polydactyl cats, known for possessing extra toes, often six or more on a single paw. This lineage traces back to the 1930s when a sea captain presented Hemingway with a white, six-toed cat named Snow White. Hemingway appreciated this characteristic and permitted Snow White’s descendants to freely roam the premises. Today, around half of the 50–60 cats residing on the property inherit the polydactyl gene, distinguishing them by their special paws.
