What was the original name of Veterans Day?

The original name of Veterans Day was Armistice Day. This day was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, marking the one-year anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. The armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, leading President Woodrow Wilson to proclaim November 11th as a day to be observed with solemn pride and to honor the heroes of the war. Congress officially recognized the day as a national holiday in 1938.

After the conclusion of World War II and the Korean War, it was decided that the holiday should be broadened to honor veterans of all American wars, not just those who fought in World War I. Thus, in 1954, Congress amended the 1938 act by striking out “Armistice” and inserting “Veterans,” officially renaming the observance to Veterans Day to honor all who served in the U.S. armed forces.
