Explanation:
[STC002097] The Lost Sea of Sweetwater, Tennessee is the biggest underground lake in the United States. It is located south of Knoxville, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Caves that are more than 45 meters (more than 140 feet) below the surface of the earth contain a complex and extensive network of caves that were utilized in the past by local Native American people, Civil War soldiers, and moonshiners. These caves served as a cool place to store food, a dance hall, and even a hideout for moonshiners. The lake was first brought to public attention in 1905, when a young kid named Ben Sands, who was just 13 years old at the time, went exploring in the cave. He had to crawl around 40 feet via a confined passageway that led into a spacious room. He was unaware at the time, but he had stumbled onto a lake that was almost 5 acres in size and would later develop into a popular tourist site.
