Explanation:
[STC001612] Up until recently, the contemporary airport in Doncaster, Yorkshire, was named for the legendary thief who stole from the wealthy to give to the needy. Founded as Finningley Airfield in 1915, the British airport was used by the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and for training purposes during and after World War II. Eventually the airfield was decommissioned in 1995, but in 2005 — with the advent of low-cost carriers and rising passenger demand — the former airfield was reopened as a commercial airport. Local authorities looked for a well-known figure with ties to the area, and Robin Hood was chosen. The earliest stories were based in South Yorkshire’s Barnsdale Forest, which encircled Doncaster. The name, however, was short-lived, and Doncaster Sheffield Airport was given to the airport in 2016.
