Pellatt blew his entire wealth on the opulent 98-room palace, but he was left penniless after electricity became publicly owned and the economy tanked during World War I. Pellatt’s bad luck drove him to sell his dream palace and all its contents for a fraction of their original value. The city of Toronto now owns Casa Loma and maintains a museum there, where visitors may see original features including the chandelier-lit Great Hall, marble-floored conservatory, and 10,000-volume library.
