The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale operates on a 1-5 ranking system that gauges a hurricane’s strength. For a tropical cyclone to attain hurricane status, it must maintain sustained winds of at least 74 mph (Category 1). The top tier in the scale, Category 5, designates storms with wind speeds surpassing 156 mph. Originating in 1971, this scale emerged through the collaborative efforts of civil engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Bob Simpson, who then served as the head of the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The scale was officially introduced to the public in 1973.
