Carlson took a vacation to Stuttgart, Germany, when he was taken to the Fernsehturm Stuttgart, a telecommunications tower that doubles as a restaurant. So thinking, he scribbled a rough plan for Seattle’s future crown jewel on a napkin at the hotel. The final design for the tower, based on a sculpture of a dancer, was presented by architect Victor Steinbrueck a year and a half before the World’s Fair. That’s how the Space Needle got its start.
