In the summer of 1783, towards the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, Princeton University functioned temporarily as the interim capital of the United States. The Continental Congress gathered in Nassau Hall, the university’s eldest structure, relocating from Philadelphia under pressure from rebellious soldiers seeking overdue wages. Starting from July 2, 1783, Congress conducted its sessions there, establishing Princeton as the country’s capital for approximately four months. It was within Nassau Hall that Congress was informed of the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, formally concluding the war and solidifying American sovereignty.
