Who was bumped off the half dollar to make room for John F. Kennedy, in 1964? Answer

The Franklin Half Dollar was the immediate predecessor in the U.S. coinage series, minted from 1948 until 1963. It was highly unusual for its time because Benjamin Franklin was the first non-president to be featured on a circulating U.S. coin. The reverse of the coin depicted the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.

Following President Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, Congress quickly passed legislation to change the design of the half dollar to honor him. The Kennedy family felt that the half dollar was the most appropriate denomination because it would avoid replacing the image of a previous U.S. President. The new Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production and first issued in 1964, cutting the Franklin Half Dollar’s run short of the usual 25-year minimum lifespan for a coin design.
